On July 6th 2012 the actual Olympic torch travels through nearby Basildon on the way to Hylands Park in Chelmsford. We are using the day as a celebration of the Olympics and organised several activities throughout the school.
July 6th is a non school uniform day and we asked all students and staff to dress in red, white and blue. Half of the money collected for non uniform will be donated to Cancer Research which is the Olympic charity that the students decided they wanted to support at the beginning of the year.
Billericay Striders have organised a replica torch relay on this day that will involve all the schools in Billericay. 8 of our students have been invited to join the Striders to run a small part of the relay with them.
In Form tutor time, the students voted for who should run this replica relay. Form tutors asked their tutees to vote for 1 individual in their own year group (anyone from the whole year group not just those in their form) who they believed had displayed the following Olympic Values at school:
Excellence, Respect and Friendship
2 from each year group with the most amount of votes were subsequently invited to run.
We calculated and verified the results from the student vote during form time on Monday 2nd July and the 8 students who have been invited to join in the replica torch relay on Friday 6th July are:
Yr 7 Connie Morgan and Tyler Richardson
Yr 8 Emma Ojera and Tyler Fowles
Yr 9 Daisy Pointing and James Neale
Yr 10 Charlie Taylor and Molly Chapman
There were many events going on throughout the day including staff delivering their lessons with an Olympic slant; there was a "treasure hunt" to find the Olympic clues and a group of Year 10 students who made a 'living image' of the Olympic rings on the school field - you can see the photographs below!
